Upper Mammoth Loop

Today (the 21st) is the first full day of exploration in Yellowstone, and we headed out early in hopes of seeing wildlife (like the bison on the road, above) and perhaps beating some of the crowds.   The center of Yellowstone is divided into an Upper Loop and Lower Loop.  we decided to set out on the Upper Loop that includes Norris, Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower-Rooseveldt (road work!), and Canyon Village back to Norris.

Along the way are many falls and bubbling geothermal areas of the sleeping volcano that is Yellowstone.   In addition, wildlife are abundant in the meadows and along the streams.  We encountered bison on the road, first, then a little while later, some elk:

Of course, there `are warnings everywhere to not stop your car in the road (totally ignored) nor to get out and approach any wildlife.  The picture below shows how well people follow these cautions:

Several groups of people took their children out with them.

Helen was still watching her knee, so we let the Energizer Bunny walk to the Artists Pots by herself.

We also encountered some Mule deer:

Ay mammoth, a short loop road took us past some great bubbling pots, gypsum and calcium carbonate deposits:
